The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge, in plain words
- A time-limited Medicare demonstration running from 1 July 2026 to 31 December 2027 (CMS).
- Eligible people in a Medicare Part D plan pay a $50 copay for a monthly supply of certain GLP-1 medicines (CMS).
- The Part D deductible does not apply, the copay does not count toward your true out-of-pocket costs, and no low-income subsidy is provided for it (CMS).
- A central processor handles prior authorization, claims and payment to pharmacies (CMS).
- The National Council on Aging reports the medicines included as Wegovy (injection and pill), the Zepbound KwikPen and the Foundayo pill, and eligibility as a BMI of 35 or higher; or 30 or higher with heart failure, uncontrolled hypertension or kidney disease; or 27 or higher with a previous stroke, prediabetes, a previous heart attack or peripheral artery disease. CMS's own pages do not list these, so confirm on Medicare.gov.
- Check eligibility at Medicare.gov/glp1bridge, or call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227; TTY 1-877-486-2048).

- Which medicines are on the formulary, and at what tier and copay?
- Is prior authorization needed, and what does my prescriber have to document?
- Do I have to try another treatment first (step therapy)?
- Are there quantity limits or a maximum length of coverage?
- Does a telehealth prescriber count, or must it be an in-network clinician?
If insurance will not cover it
Most online GLP-1 programmes are cash-pay. The US GLP-1 price index lists every price we track, read daily from each provider's own page, with 3, 6 and 12 month costs. For a ranking, see the cheapest GLP-1 online or the best online GLP-1 programs by use case. Compounded medicines are not FDA approved.
Frequently asked questions
Does Medicare cover GLP-1 medicines for weight loss?
From 1 July 2026 to 31 December 2027, the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge lets eligible people in a Medicare Part D plan get a monthly supply of certain GLP-1 medicines for a $50 copay. It is a time-limited demonstration, eligibility depends on weight and health conditions, and a prior authorization is needed. Check at Medicare.gov/glp1bridge or call 1-800-MEDICARE.
Which medicines are in the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge?
CMS's pages say certain GLP-1 drugs without naming them. The National Council on Aging reports Wegovy (injection and pill), the Zepbound KwikPen and the Foundayo pill. Confirm the current list on Medicare.gov before you rely on it.
Does the $50 copay count toward my Part D out-of-pocket costs?
No. CMS says the Part D deductible does not apply, the $50 copay does not count toward your true out-of-pocket costs, and no low-income subsidy is provided for it.
Does insurance cover compounded semaglutide or tirzepatide?
Generally plan by plan, and most online programmes selling compounded GLP-1 medicines are cash-pay. Compounded medicines are not FDA approved. Ask your plan directly if you hope to claim.
